Object: Camel Nose Peg

Provenance: Jaipur

Description: This wooden object of beauty is a camel nose peg. It is used by human handlers to steer the large, long-necked ungulate mammal of an arid country. With a flat bottom and a treacherous spike, the peg is losing favour to its polymer counterpart, or, more humanly, to the complete nullification of the requirement of one. I went hunting for these a few years ago in Jaipur and found them in one of the dusty bazaars, a remnant of the past.
